Kenworth Trucks

History of Kenworth

Kenworth is one of America’s foremost truck manufacturing companies, operating alongside its sister company Peterbilt under the PACCAR brand to produce vehicles that populate every highway in the U.S.

Founded over a century ago, the business that eventually became the Kenworth Truck Company was originally called Gerlinger Motors when it opened in 1912.

The company got its current name in 1923 from a combination of the names of its founders, Harry Kent and Edgar K. Worthington.

In the 1960s, Kenworth introduced two truck models that would establish standards that the company has continued to expand upon even today: the W900 and the K900.

In addition to continuing the K and W-series, Kenworth began its T-series of trucks with the T600 in 1985. The T800 — a heavy-duty variant of the T600 — was introduced in 1987.

Today, the W900 and the T800 are two of ten different vehicles currently produced by Kenworth in North America. The company has recently introduced a line of electric vehicles incorporating smart technology and digital displays, like the current T680 Next Gen.
