Silverado at Auction

The History of the Chevrolet Silverado

The Chevrolet Silverado has consistently been one of the highest-selling trucks in the United States since its introduction over two decades ago.

The Silverado name was originally used for a luxury trim for the Chevrolet C/K in 1975. In the late 90s, the Silverado formally became its own truck model as the successor to the C/K.

The Silverado is very similar to the GMC Sierra, which debuted the now-signature Denali luxury trim associated with Sierra trucks. Both trucks feature identical torque and horsepower potential, with small technical and aesthetic differences.

The first model of the Silverado was released in 1999 after almost a full decade of development. Wayne Cherry and Ken Sohocki collaborated to design the first generation of the Silverado. Cherry also designed the second-generation Silverado and the GMT900 Heavy Duty.

The Silverado is currently in its fourth generation, and continues to be updated today thanks to its popularity and success. New versions of the Silverado continue to be rolled out each year with new and improved features. Trucks released in the 2022 model year feature a 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and an electric variant of the Silverado 1500 is scheduled to debut in 2023.
