Smith & Wesson Come to Tennessee

In September, Smith & Wesson Brands, Inc. announced that its headquarters will be moving to Maryville, Tennessee, starting in 2023. That’s over 700 miles away from S&W’s present-day headquarters in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Springfield has been the home of Smith & Wesson since the company’s founding in the 1850s. The move will also bring elements of the company’s operations to Maryville, including 750 new jobs.

“This has been an extremely difficult and emotional decision for us,” said Mark Smith, the President and Chief Executive Officer of the company. “For the continued health and strength of our iconic company, we feel that we have been left with no other alternative.”

The company cited the low cost of living in Tennessee for their reasoning behind the move. Other reasons mentioned include strong 2nd Amendment support, improved quality of life for workers, and better access to qualified labor.

S&W is investing an estimated $120 million into the move. Construction on the Maryville facility is expected to start by the end of the year, with an anticipated completion date of 2023. The new building won’t only function as the company’s new headquarters; molding, assembly, and distribution operations will all take place at the site after the move.

Tennessee is the highest-ranked state nationwide when it comes to employment in the small arms and ammunition sector. The employment rate of this sector has increased by 54% in Tennessee within just the past five years.

The Springfield Smith & Wesson facility will remain in operation during and after the move. As part of the move, some facilities will be shut down in both Connecticut and Missouri.
